12.05.2003 - In 1998 MAN Turbo secured an order for one of the biggest barrel-type compressors. It is being used in a refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, USA to compress so-called coker gas, which is formed during refining of very heavy crude oil. The fully assembled unit is over 14 meters long, approx. 5 meters wide and high and weighs 70 tonnes. Following a successful test run, the motor-driven compressor was commissioned in 1999.

To reduce the naturally occurring sulfur content in natural gas, desulfurization has to be carried out in a hydrofiner during distillation. To do this, the distillate is mixed with hydrogen, heated and then routed to a reactor filled with a catalyst. This produces hydrogen sulfide. The cleaned product plus the hydrogen sulfide and the remaining hydrogen are separated again. The hydrogen is used afresh as a basic material in the process. The hydrogen sulfide is converted to elementary sulfur in downstream Claus plants.
